Louisville, Ky. - After two and a half months of just practicing and no games, we (the University of Louisville Men's soccer team) are off to Brazil for the next ten days to compete against storied programs such as Flamengo and Fluminese. This trip also doubles as our spring break and the coaches have provided us with some free time on the beach in Rio.
Between the beach and fields, we are spending time doing community service outside Sao Paulo. Through coach Lolla, we've partnered with a company called EGDE Outreach that provides clean water to disaster stricken countries such as Haiti after the earthquake. Before arriving in Brazil, we spent a weekend learning how to put together the water purification systems and actually drank water that we purified.
What these systems can accomplish is simply amazing. It uses water, salt and a car battery to purify contaminated water and make it drinkable. Eventually, one of the systems we set up will serve thousands of people along the Amazon. It will be aboard a hospital boat that runs up and down the Amazon.
The high level of soccer, the view on the beach, and helping to improve thousands of lives is sure to make this an unforgettable spring break. Check back at UofL Sports.com as I will be sending updates when I can over the next 10 days.
