Louisville, Ky. - The 11th ranked Louisville men's soccer team defeated the Fordham Rams in their home opener 2-0 on Friday evening in Cardinal Park. The Cardinals remain undefeated with a 2-0-1 record while the Rams fall to 1-2-0 on the season.
The game started out with a back and forth effort between the two teams as both teams battled for possession. The Cardinals were able to get an early chance at the goal when the ball was struck across the box to a waiting Colin Rolfe, whose header just went wide left.
The Rams' best shot of the half came on a free kick struck into the box where Andre Boudreaux had to punch the ball up into the air and then had to scramble back to make a diving save on a rebound header from Matt Courtenay. A late chance at a goal came for the Cardinals in the 43rd minute, when Aaron Horton broke free down the right side crossing the ball into the box to Buck Tufty, whose attempt went high over the crossbar.
Louisville ended the half with a 4-2 shot advantage and a 2-0 corner kick advantage. Cardinal goalkeeper Andre Boudreaux finished the half with one save, while Fordham goalkeeper Ryan Meara had none.
The Cardinals came out in the second half with an offensive flurry which resulted in Louisville striking first in the 46th minute, when J.T. Murray blasted the ball from 20 yards out off a Fordham deflection surprising Meara to put Louisville up 1-0. The goal was Murray's first of the season. Louisville had another chance to score when Meara had to make a diving save on Kenney Walker's shot from just inside the left side of the box.
The Cardinals scored again in the 62nd minute when a pass from Nick DeLeon broke through the defenders in front of the net to an open Dylan Mares in the box, who slipped it past the goalie for his first career goal, putting the Cardinals up 2-0. Fordham almost cut into the lead in the 73rd minute when a shot from John Niyonsaba hit the crossbar bouncing out of the box.
Louisville finished the game with a 10-6 shot advantage and a 4-1 corner kick advantage. Boudreaux finished the game with one save while Meara finished with two saves. The Cardinal defense held the Rams to just one shot on goal the entire game, bringing the season total to just three in three games.
Louisville will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 12 as they host Appalachian State in Cardinal Park at 1:00 p.m. The game is part of the Pack the Park promotion with lots of activities during the men's soccer and field hockey games.
