The 2-0 University of Louisville Cardinal volleyball team travels to Lexington on Wednesday night to face off against the #16-ranked Kentucky Wildcats (0-2) at 6:30 p.m.
The Cardinals are coming off wins over North Dakota State and Ohio University, the reigning 2009 Summit and MAC Conference Champions, over the weekend during the Louisville Invitational with Anastasia Artemeva taking MVP honors. Kentucky fell to Nebraska and Iowa State at the AVCA Showcase in Omaha, Neb. The Wildcats suffered its first 3-0 loss in 63 matches with its loss to No.2 Nebraska on Saturday. It marked the first such loss since falling 3-0 to then ranked No. 13 Wisconsin in the third match of the 2008 season. Subsequently, in that 63-match span UK captured wins in 30 matches by the same 3-0 score.
In a rivalry that is ancient by women's athletic standards, U of L leads the series record 24-23 over the Wildcats, in a rivalry dating back to 1977. The Cardinals have won 19 of the last 20 matches with the last loss coming 9/21/99.
This marks the second consecutive season the two squads will meet after a three-year hiatus in the series. The match is set to air live on Fox Sports South and CWKYT (Lexington) with Dick Gabriel on the call and former UK coach Kathy DeBoer offering the color analysis.
Last year the rivals resumed the in-state rivalry with a match in Louisville. U of L battled the the No. 16-ranked Kentucky to a five-set win (25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 22-25, 16-14). The teams played before a record crowd of 1,270.
