
Softball Splits Doubleheader at South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. - - The University of Louisville softball team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader with host USF Saturday. The Cardinals took the first game 4-0 while the Bulls prevailed 2-1 in the nightcap.
In the opening game, sophomore Tori Collins scattered two hits in her fourth shutout of the season and Colby Wherry went 2-for-3 with two RBI as the Cards improved their BIG EAST record to 12-5.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard in the second when Colby Wherry walked and Jordan Trimble and Alicja Wolny connected on singles to load the bases for Vanessa James's two-out RBI single.
The Bulls had a chance to score in the bottom of the fouth when Gina Kafalas broke up Tori Collins' no-hitter when she beat the throw for an infield single. Kafalas advanced on sacrifice bunts by Tara Toscano and Janine Richardson to place the tying run at third with two outs. Tori Collins delivered a strikeout to end the inning.
Louisville tacked on another run in the top of the fifth when Chelsea Bemis connected on a two-out double and was lifted for pinch-runner Chelsea Jordan. Wherry's RBI single gave the Cards a 2-0 lead.
USF threatened again in bottom of the sixth when Alexis Nowell drew a leadoff walk and Cat Olnick singled and Toscano walked to load the bases with one out. Collins got Richardson and Alison Savarese to pop up to second baseman Jordan Trimble to get out of the jam and preserve the shutout.
Melissa Roth led off the top of the seventh with a double and moved to third on Jennifer Esteban's groundout. Bemis was intentionally walked to place runners on the corners and set up Wherry's RBI single. Trimble reached on a fielder's choice and an error on the play allowed Bemis to reach third to load the bases. Brittany York's walk plated Bemis for the 4-0 final.
Collins (14-4) went the distance for her fourth shutout of the season, scattering two hits and striking out six. Wherry led the team with a 2-for-3 showing, two RBI showing at the plate.
Brittany Bowles (5-8) took the loss, giving up one earned run on four hits and striking out four in 4.2 innings.
In game two, the teams played through four scoreless innings before USF took advantage of three hits and two Cardinal errors to put up two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Laura Fountain singled, took second on Toscano's sacrifice bunt and scored on Olnick's RBI hit. Kafalas followed with a bunt single. Two Louisville throwing errors sent Olnick home and she was called safe on a close play at the plate. Louisville head coach Sandy Pearsall was ejected after arguing the call that put the Bulls up 2-0.
Louisville answered in the top of the sixth when Esteban led off the frame with a bunt single, stole second and scored on Trimble's base hit to make it a 2-1 game.
Kristen Wadwell (15-10) took the loss, giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits and striking out four in six innings.
Lindsey Richardson (11-7) got the complete game win, allowing one earned run and scattering three hits while fanning four. Olnick was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI to lead the Bull's offensively.
U of L (33-16, 12-6) and USF (22-27, 7-11) will meet in the rubber game Sunday at 11 a.m.
