
Softball Takes Down USF 5-0

TAMPA, Fla. - - The University of Louisville softball team defeated host USF 5-0 to clinch the three-game BIG EAST Conference series Sunday afternoon.
The Cards jumped to an early 4-0 lead when Colby Wherry led off the second with a single, Jennifer Esteban was safe on an intended sacrifice bunt and Alicja Wolny's hit loaded the bases for Katelyn Mann's RBI single. Kristin Austin sent a grounder to USF third baseman Alison Savarese who attempted to tag Wherry as she headed home, but dropped the ball. Mann was thrown out as she tried score on the play. Melissa Roth's RBI single plated Austin. Vanessa James, who had reached on a fielder's choice came around to score on a wild pitch to complete the four-run inning.
Louisville struck again with a run in the fourth. Mann singled, took second on Austin's hit. Roth was intentionally walked to load the bases for Esteban's RBI hit, increasing the lead to 5-0.
Cardinal starter Tori Collins took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before JoJo Medina connected on an 0-2 count for a bloop single to left field that fell just outside of a diving Esteban's glove. Alison Savarese followed with an infield single, but the Bulls would get no closer as Collins retired the next three batters to preserve the shutout.
Collins (15-4) picked up her second consecutive shutout, scattering two hits and striking out six. Wolny was 2-for-3 with her team-leading 19th double of the season. Mann, Esteban and Wherry also had a pair of hits in the game.
Capri Catalano (2-5) took the loss, allowing four runs, one earned on 10 hits. The Bulls drop to 22-28 (7-12 BIG EAST).
U of L (34-16, 13-6) currently sit in third place in league standings as they enter the final week of regular season play when they travel to Connecticut for a three-game series.
