
Louisville Softball Sweeps Connecticut 5-0 and 10-1

STORRS, Conn. - - Junior Chelsea Bemis connected on two home runs to lead the University of Louisville softball to a 5-0 and 10-1 sweep of host Connecticut Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals improve their record to 36-16 and 15-6 in BIG EAST Conference play.
The start time of first game was pushed back an hour due to rain in the area. Tori Collins and Kristen Wadwell combined on a one-hitter, while Chelsea Bemis and Alicja Wolny homered as the Cardinals defeated host Connecticut 5-0.
The game featured a pitcher's duel through four innings with UConn's Kiki Saveriano giving up two hits and Louisville's Tori Collins surrendering only one.
The Cardinals had a chance to score in the fourth when Chelsea Bemis doubled, Colby Wherry reached on an error and Alicja Wolny walked to load the bases with one out. Saveriano retired the next two batters to get out the jam.
Louisville finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Melissa Roth and Jennifer Esteban back-to-back two out walks. Chelsea Bemis followed with her 11th home run of the season over the centerfield fence to give the Cards a 3-0 lead.
Wolny led off the sixth with her fourth home run of the season - a shot down the right field line - to give Louisville a 4-0 lead. Kristin Austin singled, Vanessa James walked and Roth reached on a fielder's choice for Esteban's bases-loaded walk to make it a 5-0 game.
Collins (16-4) got the win, allowing one hit in 4.0 innings while Kristen Wadwell combined on the shutout and picked up her second save and did not allow a hit in 3.0 innings of work. Bemis was 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBI. Wolny was 2-for-3 with a home run and her team-leading 20th double of the season.
Saveriano (12-14) took the loss, giving up five earned runs and striking out three in 5.1 innings.
In game two, Louisville took advantage of 12 hits, including home runs from Bemis and Wherry, en route to a 10-1 win.
The Cards took the lead in the second when Wolny and Katelyn Mann delivered back-to-back singles to start the inning and came home on Austin's team-leading fifth triple of the season which fell in on the left field line. Vanessa James followed with an RBI single to make the score 3-0.
The Huskies got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when Jessica Arremony reached on an infield single and Kim Silva followed with a double to place runners at second and third for Jennifer Ward's RBI bunt single. Collins retired the next three batters to end the inning with the score 3-1.
U of L put up a three-spot in the top of the fourth behind Bemis' second three-run homer of the day. Roth led off the frame with a single and Jennifer Esteban reached on an error to set up Bemis' 12th roundtripper of the season, making the score 6-1.
The Cards tacked on three more runs in the sixth - this time Colby Wherry delivered the three-run shot over the left field fence. Esteban walked and Roth doubled to set up the score and give Louisville a 9-1 lead. Wolny singled, took second on a passed ball and scored on Jordan Trimble's base hit to make it a 10-1 game.
Wadwell (16-10)got the win, holding the Huskies hitless and striking out two in three innings of relief. Collins surrendered one earned run on three hits and fanned four in three innings. Bemis was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, three RBI and two runs. Wolny was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Mann was 2-for-4 with a run.
Tricia Sullivan (7-14) took the loss, giving up nine runs, eight earned, on 10 hits and striking out three in 5.1 innings. UConn drops to 21-29 (7-14 BIG EAST).
The teams will wrap up the regular season Sunday at noon.
