
Louisville Softball Tops Connecticut 7-3

STORRS, Conn. - - The University of Louisville softball team concluded the regular season with a 7-3 win over host Connecticut, completing a three-game sweep of the Huskies. U of L (37-16, 16-6) finishes the season at No. 3 in BIG EAST Conference standings.
"Hopefully this weekend's sweep on the road will give us confidence and momentum going into the Big East Conference tournament," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall.
The Cardinals struck early with three runs in the first. Melissa Roth led off the game with a single and was safe at second on a throwing error when Jennifer Esteban reached on a fielder's choice. Chelsea Bemis' delivered an RBI single to put the Cards on the scoreboard. Roth came home on an error as Bemis stole second. Colby Wherry's RBI hit plated Bemis.
Louisville tacked on two more runs in the second when Austin reached safely on an infield single and move to third on Roth's double. Esteban was safe on a fielder's choice to load the bases for Bemis' sacrifice fly. Roth came home on a passed ball to increase the lead to 5-0.
The Huskies answered in the bottom of the fourth when Amy DeLuca singled and Amy Vaughn followed with a two-run shot over the right field fence to make it a 5-2 game.
The Cards extended the lead to 6-2 on Alicja Wolny's RBI single in the top of the sixth. Esteban reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on Wolny's two-out hit.
U of L added one more run in the seventh when Katelyn Mann walked and scored when Vanessa drilled a double to left field to make it a 7-2 game.
UConn got a run back in the bottom of the seventh behind Brittany Duclos' two-run double. Kim Silva reached on an error and was lifted for pinch-runner Kathleen Brenneman who scored on Duclos' double down the left field line for the 7-3 final.
Kristen Wadwell (17-10) got the win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out three in six innings. Roth went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and two runs to lead the Cardinals offensively. Bemis was 1-for-1 with two RBI.
Tricia Sullivan (7-15) took the loss, giving up five runs, two earned, on six hits and striking out four in five innings of work. Duclos and Vaughn each had a pair of hits for the Huskies.
U of L (37-16, 16-6 BIG EAST) is third in the BIG EAST Conference final standings - full bracket will be released Sunday evening.
Louisville will be the host site of the 2010 BIG EAST Conference tournament which will be held May 13-15 at Ulmer Stadium. The top eight teams of the league's 15 teams will qualify for the event and will be seeded according to their finish in the league standings. CBS College Sports will air the Semifinals and Championship game live. The champion receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
