No. 19 Lacrosse Downs the Ducks

The No. 19 University of Louisville Lacrosse Team held off Oregon, winning by the score of 13-10 in the first match-up between the Cardinals and the Ducks. The win improved the Cardinals' record to 4-0, a feat that was also accomplished by the 2009 Cardinal squad.
"This was an important win for our team. A long travel trip and up against a fast and powerful Oregon squad, we competed for 60 minutes and played with incredible intensity," said U of L head coach Kellie Young. "Our defense was the most disciplined I've seen in my years at Louisville anchored by first year keeper Danielle Pawliw with a career high 13 saves. I am very proud of this sqaud and am thrilled by our growth in the last few weeks."
Freshman Danielle Pawliw stepped up big for Louisville, tying the third highest school record for total saves in a single game with 13. This proved to be a key point in the contest as the Ducks outshot the Cardinals 39-23.
Emily Dashiell ignited the scoreboard, netting her first of four goals on the day just 50 seconds into game for the Cardinals. Sammy Allen found the back of the net 71 seconds later with her first of two goals to give U of L an early two goal lead. The Ducks came right back and netted three goals before Bergan Foley knotted the score at three with her first of two goals of the contest. Oregon came back to tie the score at four before Katie Oliverio put the Cardinals up for good with 7:28 left in the first half.
Lianne Bobal scored a hat-trick for the Cardinals with three goals, while Liz Lovejoy added a goal. Katie Oliverio dished out two assists during the game. The Cardinals took advantage of free-position shot opportunities, hitting four-of-eight on the afternoon. Emily Dashiell, Katie Oliverio, Lianne Bobal, and Bergan Foley all found the back of the net on free-position opportunities. Louisville also took advantage of five Duck yellow cards, scoring four of their 13 goals with the extra player on the field.
The Cardinal defense picked up 21 ground balls on the afternoon, led by Ashley King's five. Bergan Foley and Meghan Ryan each added three ground balls for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals will travel to Ohio State on Saturday, March 13th to take on the Buckeye. The opening draw is schedule for 3 PM. The Cardinals are 0-1 against the Buckeyes, dropping a 15-12 decision at the U of L Lacrosse Stadium on March 14, 2009. The Buckeyes are receiving votes in the Inside Lacrosse Women's Media Poll.
