The University of Louisville lacrosse team battled regional power Ohio State to a 15-14 lead with a minute remaining but could not stave off a furious Buckeye offensive onslaught when OSU scored a goal to tie and then netted the gamewinner with 35 seconds remaining to take the game 16-15.
OSU's Maghan Beaudrault gave the Cardinals their first loss of the season with 36 seconds remaining in regulation to give Ohio State a dramatic victory over Louisville (4-1) Saturday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The tally was Beaudrault's second of the game and came just 32 seconds after Brittney Zerhusen tied the game at 15.
"It was a tough day from which I can only hope we will learn and grow," said Kellie Young, U of L head coach. "We are better than we played and must learn to thrive, not panic, under pressure."
After Louisville jumped out to the early 5-3 lead, the Buckeyes came back behind three first half goals off the bench by Kirsten Donahue to head into the half with a 10-9 advantage. The Cards were buoyed by three first half goals by Lianne Bobal and two by Bergan Foley.
After the half, U of L scored two goals, one by Emily Dashiell and one by Foley at four minutes in to tie at 11 at 24.33. Ohio State scored twice and then pushed that lead to 14-12 after Brittney Zerhusen scored with 12:38 remaining. Undeterred, the Cardinals scored three unanswered with Lianne Bobal, Liz Lovejoy and Emily Dashiell each boarding a goal, before Ohio State (4-2) scored a pair to take the lead for good with less than a minute remaining.
Ohio State outshot the Cardinals 40-37 and the Cardinals were on the wrong end of a 16-10 turnover deficit. Bobal scored four goals, Foley had a hat trick with three. Freshman keeper Danielle Pawliw had 11 saves and took the loss. OSU's Gabby Capuzzi led the Buckeyes with four goals.
The Cardinals stay on the road with their next faceoff scheduled at Vanderbilt March 17.
