Louisville, Ky. - The Columbus Crew announced that they have signed midfielder Othaniel Yanez and that he will occupy a place on the club's supplemental roster. Per club and league policy, no further terms of the deal were disclosed. Yanez becomes the first Cardinal signed by an MLS team.
Yanez was selected by the Crew in the fourth round (No. 61 overall) of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft after a four-year career at the University of Louisville. The 22-year old native of Moreno Valley, Calif., appeared in 66 matches, with 63 starts, while tallying five goals and four assists in his four seasons with the Cardinals. Yanez was the Cardinals' team MVP in two of his four seasons on the squad, and was also named to the 2009 All-Big East Tournament team as a senior and the 2007 All-Big East third team in his sophomore season. He will fill one of the Crew's four supplemental roster slots.
"Othaniel is good central midfielder with a good attitude," said Crew head coach Robert Warzycha. "He covers a lot of ground, works hard and is willing to do anything to help the team, so we are happy to have him."
Founded by American sports pioneer Lamar Hunt, the Columbus Crew is Ohio's Major League Soccer club, anchoring a diverse sports and entertainment enterprise. One of the league's Charter Members, it won its first MLS Cup Championship in 2008 and has also won the 2002 U.S. Open Cup championship and MLS Supporters' Shield titles in 2004, 2008 and 2009.
