University of Louisville volleyball team starts this weekend off with the annual Dig for the Cure to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer awareness. This year, the match is against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame with both teams wearing specially designed pink uniforms. The volleyball match time has been set at 10 a.m. so as to not conflict with the U of L Memphis football game at 2p.m. Attendance will not only support the Cards but also the fight against breast cancer. The second matchup of the weekend will pit the Cardinals with the DePaul Blue Demons, October 10 at 2p.m. Both matches are at Cardinal Arena.
The Cards are coming off a successful road trip where they swept BIG East foes UConn and St. John's with 3-0 victories. Sophomore Tanya Lukyanenko led the team, setting a career-high with 12 kills on a .435 hitting percentage against Connecticut and followed it up with a 10 kill performance against St. John's earning her BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll honors. Louisville is also getting it done on defense posting 24 blocks for the last two games.
U of L will need a solid effort to take down Notre Dame which comes in riding a 19-match regular-season conference winning streak. The Fighting Irish are led by Freshman Sam Brown, who is hitting a team-best .577 in league matches this season. The match has developed into a league rivalry over the last few years with Notre Dame winning the last three regular-season meetings with Louisville, but the Cardinals knocking the Irish out of the last four BIG EAST Championships. Last year's Cardinal win in the 2009 BIG EAST Championship snapped a Notre Dame 15-match winning streak.
DePaul comes into Cardinal Arena seeking its first BIG EAST win of the season. The Blue Demons are led by senior Kate Letcher who has 146 kills for the season. DePaul has four starters from last season back and are trying to bring along its young talent. The Cards have 20-2 record against the Blue Demons.
