Louisville, Ky. - Hello to all. Your Cardinal men's soccer team had another successful week with back-to-back overtime wins over DePaul and the USF to clinch the BIG EAST regular season title. We are proud of this accomplishment. This title reflects consistency in our play, but is merely a foundation step in reaching our ultimate goal of winning the National Championship.
The match against DePaul at Cardinal Park Stadium last Wednesday was played longer than expected. We felt we were the stronger side from the beginning but at the end of regulation, the scoreboard read an even 1 to 1. Not surprisingly, "Superman" Nick DeLeon found the back of the net during the first overtime. DeLeon has built a legendary reputation this 2010 season for scoring exceptional game-winning goals. With the ball at his feet, don't blink, or your likely to miss something spectacular.
We departed for Tampa on Friday morning after training and breakfast. We were thrilled when we found out our flights were direct. This is new for the team this season. Normally, we take connecting flights to our destination. Occasionally, our connecting flight will be completely opposite of our destination with layovers lasting for hours.
The bros will find different activities to occupy themselves to kill time. Most of us read, listen to music, nap, or cake... Ah yes. Good old cake. This is a term widely used amongst the team. The team definition of cakin is: the act of communicating sweet nothings to one's girl, girls, or girlfriend in attempt to flirt or impress. The most common form of communication to cake is through text messaging. It's easy to catch someone mid cake. They are extremely focused on the text - rereading the message over and over. The following minutes will be spent on perfecting what girls would call a "cute" response message. Attempting to communicate with someone mid cake is pointless. Nothing seems to break concentration. Even though we have all fallen victim to cakin, including myself, there is only one Cake King on the team. We all know who holds this crown... His name is David, he's cakin' right now.
We were fortunate to have such great weather against USF. By nightfall, the temperature dropped to 75 degrees with a light cool breeze. The crowd did a memorable job intensifying the atmosphere. The student section behind our goal keeper Andre Boudreaux was constantly chanting and verbally harassing our players. Only a few feet from the touch line, Andre caught most of the abuse. As expected, Andre was calm and collective directing our players in front of him throughout the match.
What do ya know? DeLeon scored his second consecutive overtime goal to quite the crowd. What a brilliant ball served across the box by "Wonder Boy" freshman Dylan Mares. As we celebrated the USF fans violently booed the winners. But it was indeed an exciting game and a job well done by both sides.
We are currently on our way to play Syracuse Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. We are stuck in Cleveland's airport due to a weather delay. Our flights have been delayed all day. This morning just before our departure time at 11:45 a.m., we were told to take shelter in our locker room. There was a tornado warning for Louisville and the whole campus had to take cover. This lasted for roughly twenty minutes and when Coach Sanchez opened the door to tell us we could depart, his face was priceless. Twenty minutes is short enough for the team to become restless. We might be the Cardinal Men's Soccer Team but we are all kids at heart. As soon as the first ball was lobbed across the locker room others followed eventually escalating to a full blown dodge ball match... with the lights off. Coach Sanchez opened the door to a sight of lifeless bodies on the floor with the fortunate souls peeking over their man made fortresses consisting of bags and equipment. While taking such a sight in, Coach Sanchez managed to inform us it was time to leave. Freshmen quickly picked up the war zone and we departed for Cleveland. DO WORK CARDS!
