INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Louisville women's soccer team closed the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 2-1 win over Butler on Sunday afternoon at the Butler Bowl.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 3-4 overall and extended its winning streak against Butler to five, while the host Bulldogs dropped to 4-6 on the season with the loss. Louisville also halted a two-game skid overall with the win.
"It was a crazy weekend for us because on Friday night, we played great soccer and came out on the losing end, while today, we underperformed and came away with a winning result," said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "We definitely need to pick up our performance and find a way to put both of those together for the rest of the season to get the results we need in the BIG EAST Conference."
After less than 40 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Cardinals were the first to break through as senior Lindsay Boling connected on a direct kick from just outside the box in the 40th minute for a 1-0 Louisville advantage. The goal, which was the second of the season and the 12th of the career for Boling, was setup by a handball by Butler.
Louisville held that margin for the next 19 minutes before freshman Courtney Holtz scored her first career goal from point blank range following a long free kick for a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute. Freshman Kaitie McDonald earned her first career assist on the goal for Holtz, which turned out to be the game-winner for the Cardinals.
The Bulldogs finally broke through against the Louisville defense in the 82nd minute as Katie Griswold scored her third goal of the season as she followed a shot off the crossbar by teammate Molly Kruger to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. However, that would be as close as Butler would get as the Cardinals held the Bulldogs without a shot during the final eight minutes of action.
Overall, the Cardinals held a 10-3 advantage on shots, including a 6-1 edge on shots on-goal, while Butler finished with four corner kicks to Louisville's one.
Up next, Louisville will return home to host BIG EAST Conference foe DePaul on Friday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. ET at Cardinal Park before taking to the road at Notre Dame on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. ET in a game to be televised nationally by CBS College Sports.
