LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With an impressive summer of work on the mound under their belts, former University of Louisville pitchers and teammates Trystan Magnuson and B.J. Rosenberg each earned the call up to the AA ranks of professional baseball earlier this month.
After spending most of his summer pitching for the Lakewood Blue Claws, the Class A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, Rosenberg, who played for the Cardinals from 2004-08, was called up to the Class AA Reading Phillies of the Eastern League in the first week of Aug. Since then, the Vine Grove, Ky., native has pitched 5.1 innings of scoreless relief for Reading with three strikeouts while not allowing an earned run in his last 34 innings.
Before being called up to Reading, Rosenberg was 7-2 overall with 19 saves and an impressive 0.89 ERA in 50.1 innings of work for Lakewood and he did not allow an earned run in his final 28.2 innings of work for the Blue Claws dating back to May 31. Rosenberg departed Lakewood with his 19 saves in a season second only to Jared Simon's 30 in 2008. He produced the third lowest ERA (0.89) in team history behind Cole Hamels (0.84 in 2003) and George Rodriguez (0.80 in 2001).
Less than two weeks after Rosenberg was elevated to AA status, Magnuson, who played for the Cards from 2004-07, got the call to leave the Toronto Blue Jays' Class A club, the Dunedin Blue Jays, for the AA New Hampshire Fisher Cats of the Eastern League. Born in Vancouver, Canada and raised in Louisville, Magnuson made his debut for New Hampshire on Wednesday night with two scoreless innings of relief and two strikeouts. Before his move to AA, Magnuson was 4-1 with one save, 45 strikeouts and a 2.77 ERA in 61.2 innings of work for Dunedin in the Florida State League.
Both Rosenberg and Magnuson were standout pitchers for the Cardinals during their collegiate careers and both left lasting marks on the Louisville record books. Rosenberg, who earned All-BIG EAST Third Team honors in 2008, is second in career starts at Louisville with 47, fourth in career wins with 18, fourth in career innings pitched with 306.2, seventh in career strikeouts with 212 and seventh in career saves with nine.
Magnuson, who was an All-BIG EAST Third Team selection in 2007, holds Louisville's single season record for pitching appearances with 37 in 2007 and is tied with Rosenberg for fourth in single season saves with nine in 2007. He is also fourth in career ERA at Louisville at 3.24, sixth in career saves with 10 and eighth in career appearances on the mound with 72.
