Louisville, Ky. - Sophomore Austin Berry scored the game winning goal in the 95th minute to lift the 19th ranked Louisville Cardinals past 3rd ranked Notre Dame 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Cardinal Park. Senior Aaron Clapham scored the game equalizer in the 89th minute to force the overtime period. The Cardinals' win snaps Notre Dame's seven game unbeaten streak and its 15-game BIG EAST regular-season unbeaten streak.
"I am extremely proud of our guys because they never gave up," said head coach Ken Lolla. "We gave up a soft goal early in the second period and they never hung their heads or gave up. We earned a penalty kick and it was a good goal by Aaron Clapham. I think Austin was determined to make up for the goal he gave up and he did just that with the game-winner."
The Cardinals kept possession late in the second half trying to score the game equalizer. Louisville was fouled in the 18-yard box, and was awarded a penalty kick in the final minute of play. Clapham stepped up and floated the ball in past Irish keeper Andrew Quinn for the equalizer.
Louisville took that momentum into the first overtime period and was awarded a corner kick from the right side of the goal. Clapham served the ball to Berry who headed the ball in past the keeper for the game-winner in the 95th minute.
The Cardinals had the first scoring opportunity in the fourth minute when freshman Colin Rolfe worked his way deep into Notre Dame territory for the shot on goal that was rejected by Quinn. The Irish then had an opportunity in the 25th minute but Boudreaux came up with the save. The Cardinals out shot Notre Dame 6-3 in the first period, while the Irish held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Louisville tried to get on the board first in the second half with two shots on goal in the first five minutes. But momentum swung to the Irish and Jeb Brovsky had a shot toward the middle of the goal and Boudreaux came up with the save. But Bright Dike collected the deflection and sent it to the back of the net for the 1-0 lead in the 51st minute.
Louisville outshot the Irish 21-10 while both teams finished with four corner kicks. Boudreaux finished with five saves while Quinn finished with five.
Louisville will be back in action when they host No. 4 St. John's Saturday evening in Cardinal Park at 7:00 p.m.
