ORLANDO, Fla. - University of Louisville third baseman Chris Dominguez, the 2008 BIG EAST Co-Player of the Year and tournament MVP, has been drafted with the 167th overall pick in the 2008 MLB draft by the Colorado Rockies.
The defending National League Champions tabbed the third-year sophomore from Miami with the 25th pick of the 5th round.
Earlier in the day, Cardinal signee Jake Odorizzi was selected 32nd overall by the Milwaukee Brewers.
The only unanimous selection to the 2008 All-BIG EAST First Team, Dominguez batted .365 with 68 runs, 13 doubles, a BIG EAST-leading 21 home runs and 75 RBI, stealing 11 bases while starting all 62 games at third on the BIG EAST Champions.
Dominguez is 10th on the career home run list with 36 in just two seasons in The Ville, and placed himself tied for 7th in single season home runs, tied for 8th in runs and tied for 6th with his 2008 total in RBI.
He was a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and was on the Wallace Award watch list, both given annually to the national player of the year.
During the 2007 season he was the NCAA Columbia Regional MVP after batting .421 (8 for 19) with two doubles, a triple, four home runs and 11 RBI in five games. He hit .318 with eight home runs and 19 RBI in 11 NCAA Postseason games last year.
If Dominguez does not sign a contract with the Rockies before August 15, he would return to the Cardinals as a fourth-year junior. Day two of the draft begins Friday at 11:30 a.m. beginning with round seven.
Louisville has won 40-plus games in each of the last two seasons, advancing to the NCAA Regionals. The 2007 Cardinals won a school record 47 games under first-year Head Coach Dan McDonnell and advanced to the College World Series in Omaha for the first time in school history.
