
Softball Sweeps Seton Hall 8-4 and 9-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team opened BIG EAST Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Seton Hall Friday. The Cards won the first game 8-4 and rolled to a 9-1 win in the nightcap. Louisville improves to 16-12 (2-0 BIG EAST) while Seton Hall drops to 10-
In game one, the Cards jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Melissa Roth drew a leadoff walk and took second on Sarah Totten's sacrifice bunt. Chelsea Bemis was intentionally walked and Kassie Stanfill delivered a two-out, two-run double. Brittany York and Kristen Wadwell registered back-to-back singles and Christina Roesel reached on an error which allowed York to cross the plate.
The Pirates responded in the top of the second when Jenna Best led off with a walk and Shannon Pease was hit by a pitch to set up Brittany Schillizzi's three-run shot over the left center fence to pull Seton Hall within a run.
U of L tacked on two more runs in the home half of the inning. Totten registered a single and Bemis notched a double to place two runners in scoring position for Colby Wherry's two-run double to make it a 6-3 game.
Seton Hall got a run back in the top of the fourth when Pease singled, took second when Bennett reached on an error and scored on Christa Leighton's RBI hit to make the score 6-4.
The Cards responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Roth was hit by a pitch and moved all the way to third on Totten's sacrifice bunt and came home on Wherry's single. Stanfill delivered a hit and York blasted a two-out RBI single down the left field line to bring Wherry home for an 8-4 Cardinal advantage.
Kristen Wadwell (7-7) got the win, giving up four earned runs on four hits with nine strikeouts in seven innings. The Cards had 11 hits in the game. York led the way, batting 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run. Wherry finished 2 for 4 with a double, three RBI and a run. Stanfill was 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run.
Ashley Forsyth (6-7) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs, three earned, on two hits and striking out one in the first inning. Schillizzi was 1 for 3 with a three- run homer.
In game two, Kassie Stanfill went 4 for 4 at the plate and the Cards capitalized on 13 hits and two errors en route to a 9-1 win.
Louisville took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Melissa Roth started things off with a walk, took second on Totten's sacrifice bunt and came home on Bemis' base hit. Wherry walked and Stanfill's single loaded the bases. A passed ball sent Bemis home to make it a 2-0 game.
The Cards added another run in the third when Bemis reached on a two-out error, took second on Wherry's walk and scored on Stanfill's RBI hit to increase the lead to 3-0.
Seton Hall got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when Best delivered a leadoff triple and scored on Pease's groundout to make the score 3-1.
U of L answered with a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth. Kaylyn Castillo singled, took second on Roesel's sacrifice bunt. Cunningham singled and stole second to place runners on second and third for Roth's sacrifice fly which plated Castillo. A Pirate miscue allowed Cunningham to score and Totten to reach. Bemis followed with a walk. Wherry and Stanfill registered back-to-back RBI singles to make it a 7-1 game.
Castillo drew a leadoff walk and was lifted for pinch runner Megan Bivins who took second on Roth's single. Totten's base hit drove in Bivins to increase the lead 8-1.
The last run of the game came in the sixth inning when Wherry singled and took second on a passed ball. Stanfill beat the throw on a bunt York delivered an RBI hit for the 9-1 final.
Stanfill (7-4) got the win, allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out nine in six innings. She also went 4 for 4 with two RBI. Roth was 2 for 2 with a run and an RBI. Wherry was 2 for 2 with an RBI. Bemis was 1 for 3 with three runs.
Katie Stilwell (1-1) took the loss, giving up seven runs, only two earned, on six hits in 3.2 innings. Michelle Reed was 2 for 3 to lead the Pirate offense.
U of L (16-12, 2-0) will continue BIG EAST play with a doubleheader against St. John's Sunday at 11 a.m.
