
Softball Sweeps St. John's 1-0 and 3-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team improved to 4-0 in BIG EAST by sweeping St. John's 1-0 and 3-2 Sunday at Ulmer Stadium.
In game one, the Cards scored the only run of the contest in the third inning when Melissa Roth delivered a one-out double and scored on Sarah Totten's base hit.
The Louisville defense held strong as the Red Storm threatened to score in the top of the seventh. Kacee Cox led off the frame with a single and was lifted for pinch runner Melissa Pilley who took second on Roxy Struble's sacrifice bunt. Pilley took third on Reyes' hit to left field and was sent home for the tying run, but U of L outfielder Kassie Stanfill connected with catcher Melissa Roth to tag her out at the plate. U of L starter Kristen Wadwell got the next batter to ground out to end the game.
Wadwell (8-7) went the distance in the shutout win, scattering three hits and striking out seven. Roth led the Cards offensively, going 2 for 3 with a double and a run.
Kat Lawrence (6-8) took the loss, giving up one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts in six innings. The Red Storm had three hits in the game.
In game two, Colby Wherry drove in all three Louisville runs, capped by a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to give the Cards a 3-2 win.
The Red Storm jumped to 1-0 lead in the first inning. After retiring the first two batters of the game, Louisville starter Kassie Stanfill appeared to get Cox out of a caught foul ball, but an illegal pitch had been called to bring Cox back to the plate. Cox then belted out a home run over the left field fence to put the Red Storm on the scoreboard.
The Cards answered in the home half of the inning when Totten walked and scored on Wherry's double to even the score at 1-1.
U of L pulled ahead 2-1 the bottom of the third when Roth reached on a bunt single, took second on Totten's sacrifice bunt and crossed the plate on Wherry's base hit.
St. John's knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the fourth when Danielle Estrada registered a leadoff double, took third on a passed ball and came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brandy Reyes.
With the score still tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Chelsea Bemis drew a two-out walk to set up Wherry's game-winning double.
Stanfill (8-4) got the win, giving up two runs, only one earned, limiting the Red Storm to two hits with a career-high 12 strikeouts in seven innings. Wherry was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI to lead the Cards offensively.
Linzee Sumrall (5-4) was tagged with the loss after surrendering three earned runs on six hits and striking out three in 6. innings. St. John's falls to 13-19 (2-4 BIG EAST).
U of L (18-12, 4-0) will continue BIG EAST Conference play when the travel to Villanova on Saturday, April 5 and Rutgers on Sunday, April 6.
