FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of Louisville softball team fell to No. 8/10 Stanford 9-1 Friday evening in the Fullerton Worth Invitational.
"This team is still struggling to find its identity," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We've proven that we have the ability to hit, play defense and pitch, we just need to find the confidence to do it on a regular basis."
U of L jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Melissa Roth reached on a dropped third strike. Sarah Totten followed with a walk. Colby Wherry singled to load the bases with one out. Roth was safe at the plate on Kassie Stanfill's infield hit.
Rosey Neill blasted a two-out solo home run over the right field fence to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the second.
Stanford put up three runs in the top of the third. Anna Beardman led off with a single. Alissa Haber walked. Tricia Aggabao reached on a fielder's choice which saw Beardman safe on the play at third. Michelle Smith's fielder's choice sent Beardman home and loaded the bases for Melisa Kourz's two-run double to make it a 4-1 game.
Stanford used three hits and two Louisville errors and a walk to put up another three-spot in the fifth and increase the lead to 7-1. Aggabao led off with a single, Maddy Coon was hit by a pitch and Smith reached on an error to load the bases. Koutz delivered an RBI single to score Aggabao. Another Louisville miscue allowed Coon to score and Erin Howe drew a bases-loaded walk to send Smith home.
The sixth inning led to two more runs for Stanford. Aggabao led off with a single and a Louisville error on the play sent her to second. Coon delivered an RBI double to send her home. Coon took third on Smith's groundout and came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Koutz to make it a 9-1 game.
Kristen Wadwell (2-4) took the loss, giving up nine runs, seven earned on seven hits and striking out four in six innings. Offensively, the Cards had four hits in the game, Roth was 2 for 3 with a double and a run.
