
Softball Defeats UC-Davis 11-2

FULLERTON, Calif. - - The University of Louisville softball team powered out 11 hits, including two doubles and a home run to score 11 runs in an 11-2 six-inning win over UC-Davis Saturday in the Fullerton Worth Invitational.
The Cards took a 2-0 lead in the first. Chelsea Bemis drew a two-out walk and Colby Wherry followed with a single to place runners on first and second. Kassie Stanfill registered a hit to send Bemis home and Wherry scored on an error on the play.
Louisville put up a four-spot in the bottom of the second. Kaylyn Castillo and Kristi Cunningham reached on errors. Melissa Roth's singled Castillo home and Cunningham crossed the plate on Sarah Totten's groundout. Bemis delivered her first career home run, a two-run shot over the left field fence to make to a 6-0 game.
The Aggies got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Michelle Espiritu led off with a bunt single and moved to second on an illegal pitch. Julie Stauder's base hit placed runners on the corners for Deanna Menapace's sacrifice fly. Stauder came home on Ashley Johnson's single to make the score 6-2.
U of L answered with three runs in the home half of the inning. Roth pounded out a ground rule double to the centerfield fence. Totten reached on an error and both runners scored on Bemis' double down the left field line. Stanfill's RBI single sent Bemis home to increase the lead to 9-2.
UC-Davis threatened to push more runs across in the fifth. Sarah O'Neill and Erin Emde started the inning with back-to-back singles. All runners were safe when Espiritu reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with one out. Jenny Corbett send a grounder to third and Bemis combined with catcher Kaylyn Castillo for the force out at home. Louisville reliever Mandi Rodriguez got Deanna Menapace to line out to right field to get out of the jam.
The Cards completed the scoring in the sixth when Wherry reached on a fielder's choice and Stanfill followed with a single. Both runner's moved on Missy Vascil's sacrifice bunt and scored on Castillo's two-run single.
Stanfill led the Cards offensively, going 4 for 4 with a run and three RBI. Bemis was 2 for 2 with a double, a home run, for RBI and three runs. Roth was 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Rodriguez (2-1) got the win, giving up two hits in 1.1 innings. Starter Kristen Wadwell gave up two earned runs on four hits and struck out two in 3.2 innings. Stanfill closed the game, retiring all three batters she faced in the sixth inning.
Alex Holmes (4-5) took the loss, allowing nine runs, four of them earned and striking out four in 4.0 innings. Emde gave up two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings. Stauder was 2 for 3 with a run. UC-Davis drops to 10-9 on the season.
U of L (6-7) will continue play in the Worth Invitational when it takes on Oregon State Saturday at 6:45 (Eastern).
