The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Penn 5-2 Saturday at College Park, Md. The Cardinals improve to 11-2 on the season.
Louisville fell behind early as Penn took the doubles point to start the match. Jason Pensky and Joe Lok teamed to defeat Louisville's 23rd ranked duo of Austen Childs and Simon Childs 8-2 at the No. 1 seed. Eric Riley and Brandon Ogara topped David Simon and Robert Rotaru 8-1 at the two spot to clinch the point. At No. 3 doubles, Louisville's Viktor Maksimcuk and Pablo Camacho picked up a 7-6 (7-4) win over Justen Roth and Adam Schwartz.
In singles action, the Cards responded to win at Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 in straight sets. No. 40 Austen Childs defeated Pensky 6-1, 6-4 at the top seed. Maksimcuk topped Riley 6-3, 6-1 at No.3. Simon Childs registered a 6-1, 6-4 win over Schwartz. Rotaru beat Roth 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) at No. 5 and Alejandro Calligari topped Ogara 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 6 seed.
Penn's singles win came at No.2, where Lok edged Simon 5-7, 7-6, 6-4.
"In doubles, Penn had an answer for everything we threw at them," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "They outplayed us in doubles and I give them credit for that. I asked the team to do in singles what they did to us in doubles and they responded well. This was an excellent `bounce back' - when you lose the doubles point and go out with guns blazing in singles. It was great to see a young team bounce back on the road. This was the first time we've won after losing the doubles point."
The Cardinals (11-2) will play host Maryland at 10 a.m. Sunday.
