
Softball Falls to Pacific 3-0

FULLERTON, Calif. - FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of Louisville softball team opened the 2008 Worth Invitational with a 3-0 loss to Pacific. U of L (5-6) will face No. 8/10 Stanford at 9 p.m. Eastern Friday.
The Tigers used five hits, including two solo home runs in the win. Kellee Wilson's two-out solo home run over the left field fence gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the third. Nicole Matson led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot over center field to make it a 2-0 game.
Pacific added another run in the bottom of the sixth when Matson was hit by a pitch, took second on Nicole Gradwohl's sacrifice bunt. Karie Wilson's single sent Matson to third and she scored on a groundout by Goldsand to make it a 3-0 game.
Louisville had a chance to push runs across in the top of the seventh when Melissa Roth, Chelsea Bemis and Kristi Cunningham singled to load the bases with one out, but Pacific starter Chelsea Engle retired the next two batters to preserve the shutout.
The Cards had an earlier opportunity to score in the second when Colby Wherry led off the frame with a single, Kassie Stanfill registered a hit and Brooke McCrain reached on an error to load the bases with one out. Engle retired the next to batters to get out of the jam.
U of L starter Kassie Stanfill (2-2) took the loss, giving up two earned runs on three hits and striking out five in three innings. Kristen Wadwell surrendered one earned run and struck out two in 3.0 innings. The Cards outhit the Tigers 11-5 and stranded a season-high 12 runners in the loss. Roth led the team offensively, going 3 for 4 with a triple. Bemis, Wherry and Stanfill had two hits each.
Engle picked up the complete game win for the Tigers, giving up 11 hits and striking out five.
