Milwaukee, Wis. - The Louisville men's soccer team defeated Marquette 2-0 Friday evening in Milwaukee to improve to 5-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in league play. Senior Frank Jonke and sophomore Gerardo Chavez combined for both goals to give the Cards their first BIG EAST road win of the season. The win ties the Cards' win total from last season, after just the first month of play.
The first half finished in a scoreless tie. Louisville finished the first period with a 6-2 shot advantage.
The Cardinals depth began to wear down the Golden Eagles in the second half. Senior Jonke scored the game-winner from eight yards out off a cross from Chavez in the 77th minute. The duo combined again in the 86th minute when Jonke sent the ball to Chavez who went one-on-one with the keeper to give the Cardinals added security for the win.
Louisville finished the game with a 12-5 shot advantage. Cardinal keeper David Simolike finished the game with one save while Marquette's Steve Purdy finished with six saves. The Cards finished with eight shots on goal to Marquette's one. It is the second shutout of the season for Simolike and the Cardinal defense.
Louisville will be back in action on Sunday as the travel to South Bend, Ind. to take on the No.2/4 Fighting Irish.
