Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's soccer team defeated Oakland 3-0 in exhibition play at Cardinal Park on Sunday evening. Transfer Aaron Clapham scored the game winner on a penalty kick and finished the game with two goals.
"I thought that it showed a great team effort," said head coach Ken Lolla. "But it wasn't just a team effort tonight in the game, it was the effort all week long in practice. It took all 29 guys to prepare and it showed on the field. I thought that our depth and fitness was the difference tonight."
The first half was played pretty even with a scoreless tie at the end. Oakland finished the half with two shots while the Cardinals finished with five.
The second half was played pretty even until the 70th minute when the Cards were awarded a penalty kick. Clapham took the kick and got it in above the keeper's right shoulder to put the Cards ahead. Senior Marco Terminesi had a shot deflected in front of the keeper and took the deflection and feed Clapham for the second goal in the 85th minute. As the game was winding down, freshman J.T. Murray scored off a cross from Kenney Walker to put the game away.
Louisville finished the game with a 14-5 shot advantage, including a 3-9 advantage in the second half. Oakland's keeper Steve Clark finished the game with three saves while Cardinal keeper David Simolike finished with one save.
The Cardinals finished exhibition play with a 2-0 record. Louisville will kick off the season on Friday, Aug. 31 at Memphis with a 7:30 p.m. start at the Memphis Invitational.
