PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Louisville starter Justin Marks has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week after a dominant performance Saturday in a 4-0 win over USF.
Following a loss on Friday, Marks retired the first 16 batters of the game and allowed just two baserunners, logging six 1-2-3 innings. He worked a career-long eight innings of shutout baseball.
The freshman lefty from Owensboro fanned a career-best seven for the third time this season and did not issue a walk or hit a batter, giving up a single and a double. It was the third consecutive start he has carried a no-hitter past the fifth inning. Of the 26 batters he faced only nine had two or three ball counts.
Marks is 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 11 starts, jumping into the weekend rotation as a freshman. He has struck out 54 in 61.2 IP and has limited opponents to a paltry .177 average. He is fourth in the BIG EAST in ERA and is leading the conference in opponents batting average.
The Cardinals are 30-13 on the season, tied for the second-quickest to 30 wins in school history with the 1999 and 2002 squads. The 1984 Cardinal Nine went 30-9 to open the season. U of L is 13-5 in the BIG EAST and currently in second place, with a three-game weekend showdown against first place St. John's looming this weekend in New York.
Prior to the series with the Red Storm, the Cards will host Eastern Kentucky Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in Patterson Stadium.
