LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior outfielder Isaiah Howes has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week after collecting 13 RBI as the University of Louisville baseball team posted a perfect week with four wins on the road.
Howes, from Louisville Pleasure Ridge Park High School, was inserted into the cleanup spot in the batting order for the first time this season Wednesday at Western Kentucky and responded, going 2 for 5 with a home run and three RBI as the Cards swept the season series from the Toppers with a 14-3 win.
In a BIG EAST sweep at Seton Hall, Howes smashed a pair of triples in a 3 for 5 effort, driving in three more runs and scoring twice in Friday's 13-1 drubbing of the Pirates, spoiling the first night game in SHU's history.
On Saturday, the everyday left fielder cracked his first career grand slam and drove in five runs in a 2 for 4 effort, helping the Cards to a 16-6 win. The long ball was the first of the season by any player at spacious Carroll Field, which measures 405' to the alleys and '400 to center.
Howes capped the week with a 2 for 3 afternoon Sunday, putting the Cards up 1-0 with an RBI single in the first and repeating the feat in the eighth to plate what turned out to be the game winner in the 2-1 victory.
Overall he was 9 for 17 with five runs, two triples and two home runs. His 15 career triples is good for fifth in U of L history.
He has nearly doubled his career home run total, belting 10 of his 25 career shots this season.
Howes is batting .407 with 12 doubles, 38 RBI and has stolen six bases in eight attempts this season. He joins Logan Johnson (3/19) and Jorge Castillo (4/2) in being honored a Player of the Week as the Cards are the only team with three such honors this season.
Junior pitcher Zack Pitts (7-1, 1.12 ERA) has been named to the weekly honor roll four times, Boomer Whiting twice and Johnson once.
The Cardinals are 28-11 on the season and 11-4 in the BIG EAST, a game out of first.
