
Kentucky Upends Softball 6-3

LEXINGTON, Ky. - - The University of Kentucky used a four-run sixth to defeat visiting Louisville 6-3 Wednesday night at the UK Softball Complex. The Cardinals drop to 6-8, while the Wildcats improve to 12-5 on the season.
The Cards took an early 1-0 lead when Melissa Roth led off the second with a hit, moved to second on Brittany York's sacrifice hit and scored on Brooke McCrain's RBI single.
The Wildcats answered in the home half of the inning when Molly Johnson reached on an error and Katie Cambpell was safe on an infield single another Cardinal error allowed Johnson to score to tie the game at 1-1.
Louisville regained the lead in the fourth when Moore delivered a leadoff single and moved on Roth's sacrifice bunt. York stepped up to the plate and powered her first career home run over the centerfield fence to make it a 3-1 game.
UK got a run back in the bottom of the fourth. Alli Eckman singled and Becky Bishop and Destinee Mordecai drew back-to-back two-out walks to load the bases for Audrey Meyer's RBI single, making it a 3-2 game.
The Wildcats capitalized on three hits and two Louisville errors to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ashley Fertic, Becky Bishop each delivered one-out hits. Mordecai was safe on an infield single to tie the game. Fertic crossed the plate when Natalie Smith reached on an error to give the Cats their first lead in the contest. Mordecai scored on an error and Smith came home on a wild pitch for the 6-3 final.
Catherine Bishop (3-6) took the loss, allowing five runs, two earned on six hits and striking out five in four innings. The Cards had six hits in the game and were led by McCrain who went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Megan Jolly (2-0) got the win, allowing three earned runs on six hits in seven innings.
"We really need our upperclassmen to start playing like we know they're capable of playing," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "When they do that, this team will be very successful."
U of L will go back on the road to play in the Maryland Softball Invitational. The Cards will play Princeton at 2 p.m. and Maryland at 6 p.m. Friday.
