
No. 25 Men's Soccer Defeats the Bearcats 1-0

Louisville, Ky. - The 25th ranked Louisville men's soccer team handed Cincinnati a 1-0 shutout on Wednesday night at Cardinal Park. Sophomore Othaniel Yanez scored his first goal of the season in the 85th minute to give the Cardinals their first win over Cincinnati since the 2003 season. The victory puts the Cardinals atop the BIG EAST Red Division standings in a tie with South Florida.
"I thought this was not one of our best games," said head coach Ken Lolla. "While we were not our sharpest tonight, we still found a way to battle and that shows a lot of character."
Aaron Clapham had a chance to put the Cardinals ahead in the 30th minute but his shot hit the crossbar. Senior Marco Terminesi had another shot on goal three minutes later but UC's Miguel Rosales made the save. The first half finished in a scoreless tie. The Cardinals held a 7-4 shot advantage in the first period.
The Bearcats had the first opportunity in the second half to score when Kenny Anaba had the only shot on goal in the 53rd minute but David Simolike collected the ball for the save. The Bearcats had another opportunity in the the 62nd minute when the were awarded a free kick just outside the box but were unable to convert.
Terminesi had a shot on goal in the 79th minute but Rosales collected the ball for the save. Six minutes later Yanez collected a deflection and was able drop the game winner over Rosale's head. The Cardinal defense held strong despite the Bearcats applying pressure for the win.
The Cardinals improved to 8-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in BIG EAST play while the Bearcats fall to 5-7-1 overall and 3-3-1 in league play. Louisville will be back in action as they host Syracuse Saturday, Oct. 20 in Cardinal Park at 7:00 p.m.
