Louisville, Ky. - The Louisville men's soccer team upset No. 13 Indiana with a 2-1 overtime win Wednesday evening in Cardinal Park. The win marked the first one in school history over the Hoosiers. Indiana entered the game with a 14-0 series led over Louisville. It is also the first time in school history that the Cardinals have won consecutive games over a ranked opponent.
The Hoosiers jumped out to an early lead. The Hoosiers' Eric Alexander took a dish from Daniel Kelly just outside the penalty box and found the back of the net in the third minute of play. Senior Frank Jonke had a chance to score the equalizer in the 29th minute but the shot went just wide.
Louisville had another attempt to knot the score in the 37th minute when Kenney Walker's shot hit the cross bar and bounced back into the field of play. The Hoosiers led 1-0 at the break despite the Cards' 7-2 shot advantage in the first half.
Louisville kept the offensive pressure on the Hoosiers in the second half. Junior Aaron Clapham had a chance early in the second half off free kick but it went just wide. With just 10 minutes remaining, the Cards' picked up the offensive pressure substituting Frank Jonke for defender John Jonke. The pressure paid off in the 82nd minute when Ryan McDonald served Marco Terminesi the ball right in front of the goal for the equalizer.
After the goal, John Jonke reentered the game to help prevent a counter attack by the Hoosiers. The Cardinal defense held strong forcing the overtime period. Just 2:33 into the overtime period, Clapham got free from his defender to score the game winner off a deflection from Gerardo Chavez.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 13 as they travel to St. John's for an 8:00 match.
