The University of Louisville swimming and diving team won five events but it was not enough as the Cardinals fell to intrastate rival Kentucky Saturday in Lexington.
U of L, in its second meet in two days, dropped both meets but had head coach Arthur Albiero more than pleased with the progress his squads have made. The women fell 170-125 with the men being downed 181-106.
"It was such a good meet," said Albiero. "Our burden was extremely tough today being away from our home pool. At the end of the day, our goal was to walk away feeling good about ourselves and our ability to respond to challenges. We keep closing the gap and this was a very positive experience. We just had great efforts all around."
Highlights for the women included a pair of wins by Heather Meng, who touched first in the 100- and 200-breast. She won the 200-breast by just .29 of a second
"Heather continues to flourish in her senior season," said Albiero, of his defending BIG EAST Champion.
Abby Miller took the 400-IM for the Cardinals with a time of 4:28.52.
Freshman Amanda Henleben came from behind and won the 1000-free for the Cardinals touching out UK's Haleigh Kerns by .92 after a blistering final two laps in the most grueling race of the meet.
For the men, diver Robbie Lewis held off three Wildcat divers on the 3-meter board with a score of 318.83.
"That win speaks volumes because UK's strength has always been diving," said Albiero.
All-American Vali Preda won the 400-IM, with time of 4:01.93. It was his seventh race of the weekend and he powered to the win.
"We are three weeks away from our conference meet and our target is to prepare for the BIG EAST and I feel good about where we are and look forward to things to come. The belief is there and that is such progress in a program's development. We kept fighting and the effort was there," said Albiero.
The Cardinals face another in-state rival in Western Kentucky Jan. 27 in Bowling Green for the next stop on their road to the BIG EAST.
"The meet with WKU is always competitive, you can expect fireworks," said Albiero.
