Brooke Buringrud had 19 kills, two aces and a pair of blocks to lead No. 18-ranked Arizona to a 30-24, 20-30, 30-24, 30-25 win over host Louisville in the final match of the Louisville Courtyard by Marriott Airport East Classic Saturday night in Cardinal Arena.
Arizona improved to 5-1 and Louisville fell to 4-2. The Classic ended with a three-way tie for first so no tournament MVP was awarded. However, Louisville's Stephanie Marsh and Ana Yartseva Stewart, Arizona's Dominique Lamb and Stephanie Butkus, Dayton's Nicole Bateman and Faye Barhorst and Tennessee Tech's Erin Lynn were named to the All-Classic team.
U of L hit .238 for the match to Arizona's .266 and the two teams tied at 11 blocks apiece. U of L was led by Tatyana Kolesnikova's 20 points including 16 kills. Yartseva Stewart had 11 kills, two aces and three blocks for the Cardinals.
U of L edged out to an early lead in the first game but Arizona tied at 15 and then took its first lead at 17-16. U of L tied at 17 but never came closer than three at 25-23 and Arizona coach Dave Rubio called a timeout. A 5-1 run down the stretch put the game away for the Wildcats. U of L hitting was .167 and the Cardinals were out-dug 16-9.
In the second game, U of L took its largest lead at 11 at 23-12 on a Stephanie Marsh kill. Arizona could get no closer than nine down the stretch. U of L hitting improved to .306 as Arizona's cooled to .119. Kolesnikova had eight kills and U of L's blocking came alive, notching four to the Wildcats' one. The third game featured 14 ties and with no team taking a lead bigger than three. Up 20-18, the Cardinals had no answer for the Wildcats' 10-4 down the stretch. Lamb had seven of her 17 kills in that set.
The final game mirrored the third with 13 ties and six lead changes. The two teams tied at 20 and again at 24 before Arizona went on a 6-1 run for the win.
U of L heads to Lincoln, Nebraska to face the No. 1 ranked Huskers on Thursday evening.
