LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team dominated for the better part of the match, but were unable to break through in a scoreless tie with Wright State that double overtime couldn't solve in the opening match of the UK Invitational Friday.
"To control the rhythm of play for so much of the game and not get a result is very frustrating," said Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"We had our chances, hitting the post twice and missing three breakaways. We will need to be sharper on Sunday in the final third."
The Cardinals (2-0-1) outshot the Raiders (1-0-2) 10-2 in the first half, and 19-4 for the match, including a 4-0 advantage in extra time.
WSU keeper Steph Comisar was forced to make seven saves to preserve the shutout, while the Cardinal defense limited the Raiders to just one shot on goal that Deana Waintraub turned away for her second shutout of the season and eighth of her career.
Waintraub and the Cardinal defense extend their current scoreless streak to 279:38.
Louisville peppered the Raiders with five shots in the first 12 minutes, including Monique Gjini's attempt in the eighth minute, on which Comisar made the save.
Just under five minutes into the second half, Jamie Craft was stopped by Comisar, before Lindsay Boling's attempt off a set piece hit the crossbar.
Mallory Lampson hit the post five minutes into the first overtime, and Comisar made a save on Amy Seng minutes later.
Freshman Lindsey Fox's header was wide right in the 108th minute, and in a final attempt, Jen Avila was stopped with just under a minute to go.
Craft had six shots to lead the Cardinal attack, while Gjini added three. Both of Ashley Thompson's shots were on net and Avila had two shots.
The Cardinals held a dominant 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Louisville has a Sunday meeting with host and instate rival Kentucky on Sunday at 2:30 in the first regular season meeting between the two since 1996.
The Cards return home on Sunday, September 10 to host Xavier at 1:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park, a match that will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by WHAS-TV and ICN-2.
