LEXINGTON, Ky. - Jamie Craft's goal with a little under five and a half minutes to play in the second overtime lifted the University of Louisville to a thrilling 2-1 win over rival Kentucky in women's soccer action Sunday in the final game of the UK Invitational.
"To beat a great team like Kentucky on the road is a testament to our players," said Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"The game was similar to Friday. We felt we played very well but had some trouble finishing."
The Wildcats (2-2-0) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just three and a half minutes in on Sarah Gaunt's second goal of the season on an assist by Katey Fahey.
Gaunt worked her way in and beat Cardinal keeper Deana Waintraub 1v1, snapping the Cardinal scoreless streak at 283:05.
The score remained unchanged as the teams went to half, with UK holding a slim 6-5 shot advantage.
The Cardinals (3-0-1) picked up the pace in the second half, outshooting the Cats 8-2.
Craft was turned away in the 57th minute and Shannon Smyth twice missed wide right before Monique Gjini knotted the game at one.
The junior from Edmonton scored her second goal of the season unassisted from 25 yards out for the 1-1 score.
Louisville kept the pressure on through the end of regulation and in the first overtime, including Craft's attempt in the 97th minute, which was stopped by UK keeper Anne Ogundele.
In the 105th minute, freshman Lindsey Fox found Craft and put her in on the keeper 1v1 where she found the back of the net for the game winner.
The goal was career goal number 35 for the senior forward and her 12th game winner.
Waintraub turned away five shots in the win.
Craft had five shots on the afternoon, all of which were on goal. Gjini had three shots, while Smyth, Fox and Ashley Thompson each added two.
The Cards, off to their best start in school history, return home on Sunday, September 10 to host Xavier at 1:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park, a match that will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by WHAS-TV and ICN-2.
