LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville baseball signee Justin Marks, a left-handed pitcher from Owensboro Catholic High School in Kentucky, was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 37th round (1,123 overall) of the 2006 MLB Draft Wednesday.
He joins fellow U of L signee Nathan Adcock who was tabbed with the 141st pick of the draft Tuesday by the Seattle Mariners. Both have the option of signing a pro contract or they can retain their college eligibility and honor their letter of intent by enrolling at U of L this fall.
Another U of L signee, Danny Jordan, a catcher from Broward Community College in Florida, signed to play pro ball with the Chicago White Sox days before the draft. He was selected in the 27th round of the 2005 draft by Chicago and inked a contract while the Sox still retained his rights.
Two signees from the 2005 recruiting class at Louisville were drafted last June. Chris Dominguez was tabbed by the Texas Rangers in the 17th round and Alec Lowrey, selected by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 5th pick in the 46th round. Both elected to honor their letters of intent and played Cardinal baseball this past spring.
Any high school graduates that are not enrolled in college, all junior college players, college juniors and seniors and college players that are 21 years of age or older are eligible for the MLB draft. The first day of the draft consisted of rounds 1-18. Wednesday opened with the 19th round and continued through end of the draft with the 50th round.
The Cardinals finished third in their inaugural season in the BIG EAST conference, losing in the title game of the BIG EAST Championship.
