LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville senior pitcher Brian Halford has signed a free agent contract to play professional baseball in the Kansas City Royals organization.
The Louisville Eastern High School graduate will report to the Royals' Rookie League team, the Idaho Falls Chukars (A) on Thursday, where he will work out before being assigned.
Halford ended his career as the busiest pitcher in Cardinal history, taking the hill 97 times in his four seasons.
He is sixth all-time in IP (236.1), ninth in ERA (4.38), seventh in strikeouts (180), second in saves (17) and third in wins (18) in Louisville baseball history.
Halford was 5-4 with a 4.69 ERA and two saves as a senior. He compiled a 3-1 record with an ERA of 3.65, adding eight saves his junior season, the fifth-highest total in school history. Halford earned wins in his first nine decisions at U of L, the second-longest stretch in U of L history.
Halford will join fellow Cardinals Sean Green, Adam Haley, Mark Jurich and J.T. LaFountain in professional baseball.
