Louisville, Ky. - Louisville women's golf coach Kelly Meyers Rothberg was named 2006 BIG EAST Coach of the Year by a vote of the league's head coaches. Rothberg has been the head coach of the Louisville women's program since its inception seven years ago. This season, she led her third-seeded club to the BIG EAST Women's Championship, winning their first conference championship.
"It is a great honor that my peers recognized the hard work we put in this season," said Meyers Rothberg. "We knew we were a good team but had to struggle through some adversity with injuries this season. The team knew the hand they were dealt, going into the tournament ranked third, and took control knowing we were finally at full strength and just played the golf course. We were able to prove that our hard work all year was worth a championship."
The 68th-ranked Cardinals topped USF and Notre Dame, two teams ranked ahead of the Cards, in process to setting a new BIG EAST record score with a 889, breaking the old record of 909. Louisville finished second at the John Kirk Lady Panther and finished in the Top 10 in nine of their 11 tournaments during the 2005-06 season. Several Cardinal players overcame injuries at the end of the season and played their best golf of the year at the conference tournament, including the 2006 BIG EAST Champion Adrienne White, who underwent wrist surgery between the fall and spring season.
"I am just so proud of this team and how they have shown me all year their dedication to the game, and their commitment to give their best," said Rothberg. "I learned so much this past year about staying positive when things happened that were outside of my control and needing to focus on each player and knew that one day they would all come together. We are just happy that we peaked in time to make special memories and write a new page in the media guide. This has been a wonderful year and I am looking forward to Adrienne's run in the NCAA. We have this championship to build on for next year."
