
No. 20 Softball Opens Louisville Classic with Two Shutouts

Louisville, Ky. - - The No. 20 ranked University of Louisville softball team defeated Middle Tennessee 4-0 and Toledo 12-0 Friday in the Louisville Classic. The Cardinals improve to 19-2 on the season.
"I was pleased with our pitching today, both pitchers did a great job," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We've struggled with offense lately and I'm happy we're starting to put the ball in play more."
In the game against Middle Tennessee, the Cardinals scored their first run on a two-out solo home run by Courtney Moore in the first inning.
U of L added two more runs in the second inning as Sarah Totten tripled, driving in Amy Summers who had reached on a fielder's choice. A single by Kristi Cunningham brought Totten across the plate to make it a 3-0 game. Louisville scored again in the fifth inning when Moore doubled and Lacy Wood followed with another double to make it a 4-0 game.
Louisville's Kassie Stanfill (3-1) picked up her first complete game shutout, holding the Blue Raiders to two hits and striking out three. Offensively, the Cardinals had seven hits. Moore was 2 for 2 with a home run, a double, two runs and an RBI. Totten went 2 for 3 with a triple and run and an RBI.
Middle Tennessee's Samantha Floyd (0-2) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits in two innings. Trish White allowed one earned run and three hits in four innings of relief. Muriel Ledbetter and Shelby Stiner each had a hit in the game. The Blue Raiders fall to 7-20-1 on the season.
In game three of the Louisville Classic, the Cardinals tied their season-high of 12 runs, scoring two in the third and using a 10 run fifth to beat Toledo 12-0.
U of L began the scoring when Moore led off the third with a hit, and scored on Wood's double. A flyout from Michelle Vasquez advanced Wood to third and she scored on a wild pitch to make it a 2-0 game.
The fifth inning featured eight Louisville hits, highlighted by Wood's single and RBI triple, Totten's RBI double, Brooke McCrain's three-run triple and Moore's RBI double. In that inning, every Cardinal in the batting lineup reached and scored, Wood crossed the plate twice.
U of L starter Catherine Bishop (11-1) got the win and second straight shutout (fifth shutout of the season) striking out seven and scattering two hits in five innings. The Cards belted out a season-high15 hits in the game. Wood went 4 for 4 at the plate with three runs and two RBI. Rendon was 3 for 4 with a run. Totten was 3 for 4 with a run and 2 RBI.
Toledo's Stephanie Moore (4-7) took the loss, giving up six runs, four of them earned and10 hits in five innings. Andrea Wabol also allowed six runs, four earned in relief. The Rockets drop to 7-13 on the season.
Louisville will face defending national champion, twelfth-ranked Michigan at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ulmer Stadium. The Wolverines (14-9) defeated Eastern Michigan 1-0 in eight innings in game two of the Louisville Classic.
