Tennis player Jeremy Clark and swimmer Mandy Lynn were named as the recipients of the second annual National City Bank Postgraduate Scholarships at the Red and Black Scholar Banquet Sunday night at the Brown Williamson Room at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
Lynn and Clark earned post graduate scholarships honoring graduating U of L student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom and in competition while demonstrating positive character and citizenship.
"We are thrilled with the quality of candidates and it was a difficult decision," said Charles P. Denny, president and chief executive officer of National City Bank of Kentucky. "We know that Jeremy and Mandy are fine young people who will make a positive impact on others as they pursue their studies and careers."
Jeremy Clark, a native of Stansville, KY, was walk-on for the men's tennis team and became a three-year starter and captain for the team. He has been integral part of their success and a member of the highest-ranked U of L team when the Cards reached No. 24 last year. He has helped the team to two NCAA appearances including the regional final in 2005. Jeremy is the only Cardinal doubles player to ever be nationally ranked with three separate partners.
Jeremy is a two-time Academic All-American and has been on the Athletic Director's honor roll every semester. He will complete his degree this spring in biology and will use his National City Postgraduate Scholarship Award to pursue his goal of becoming a doctor while studying at U of L Medical School, where he has already been accepted.
A Louisville native, Mandy Lynn has been a tireless ambassador for her sport and for Cardinal Athletics. She has been active within athletics in CardsCare, amassing the most hours of anyone in that outreach program, and has served as a representative to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Mandy expanded her horizons throughout U of L's campus as a peer mentor in the College of Education, as the founder and current president of U of L Health Sciences Club, as a member and officer of the Chi Omega Sorority, and a participant in Student Government.
Mandy carries a stellar grade point average in her health and human performance major while completing her undergraduate studies in just three years. She will be pursuing postgraduate study in Exercise Physiology and Sports Administration. Among her many academic honors, Mandy has been a regular on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and the Dean's List, and received the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal in 2004. Mandy was also selected to the Golden Key International Honor Society in 2005.
Mandy's consistent efforts in the pool reflected the same commitment shown in her community and classroom endeavors. She was selected team captain and served on the team's leadership council during a time of growth and transition for U of L Swimming.
"We are very pleased to have National City's partnership with us in this program," said U of L athletic director Tom Jurich. "Jeremy and Mandy represent all that is good about student-athletes at the University of Louisville."
Golfers Will Hanna and Elly Leonard were named the senior scholars for having the highest grade point average amongst all Cardinal seniors. The women's golf team was named to the Team GPA Award winner for having the highest collective grade point average.
