LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 2007 University of Louisville baseball schedule has been released, revealing the path that first-year Head Coach Dan McDonnell and the Cardinals will take in their second season in the BIG EAST. The slate features six teams that advanced to NCAA Regionals in 2006 and three teams that the Cardinals have not played in the 98-year history of U of L baseball.
In addition, seniors Chris Cates and Logan Johnson were selected as co-captains for the 2007 season by the players and coaching staff.
Louisville will open the season at home in Jim Patterson Stadium on February 13 at 2:00 p.m. when they host Murray State, before they travel to Hattiesburg, Mississippi for three games in the Coca Cola Classic, which will include the first ever meeting with Nortwestern State, a match-up with host and former conference mate Southern Miss and a game against Southern Illinois.
The team will then embark on a three-game series in Deland, Florida against Stetson the following weekend.
Twelve of the next fourteen will be at home before the Cards head to Villanova to meet the Wildcats in the BIG EAST opener on March 23rd.
Conference road trips will include trips to face UConn, Seton Hall, Cincinnati and the first ever meeting with St. John's.
The Cards home portion of the BIG EAST slate is headlined by the return of former Cardinal skipper Lelo Prado and USF, April 27-29 and a visit by conference champion Notre Dame May 11-13. The Cards took two of three from the 8th-ranked Irish in South Bend last season before falling in the BIG EAST Championship game.
The Cards will also host West Virginia and Pitt, whom they will face for the first time as a member of the BIG EAST.
On May 9 at Patterson Stadium, the Cardinal Nine will have the first meeting with Indiana since March 5, 1997.
U of L will host Kentucky on April 11 at 6:00 p.m. and travel to Lexington April 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the annual home and home battle of the bluegrass nines.
Louisville finished their first season in the BIG EAST with a 31-29 record and a third place finish, winning the final 12 games of the season before falling in the conference title game.
The Cards return 7 starters and 17 letterwinners from last seasons' team. Cates, a third team All-BIG EAST selection, lead the team with a .332 average and has started all but one game of his career while Johnson, a second team selection last season, paced the Cards with 18 doubles, 10 home runs and 49 RBI.
Coach McDonnell, hired in June as the 18th coach in Cardinal baseball history is joined in the dugout by assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Chris Lemonis, pitching coach Roger Williams, assistant coach Xan Barksdale, student assistant Nick Haley and director of operations Brian Mundorf.
Admission to all regular season home games at Patterson Stadium is free.
