Junior Svetlana Dukule had 17 kills, and a block to lead the University of Louisville to a 30-12, 30-15, 30-17 win over visiting South Florida in BIG EAST volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Arena.
U of L, 19-6 and 12-1 in the BIG EAST, hit a season-high .539 in the match and held the Bulls to just 44 total points to tie the season's lowest opponent point total. The Bulls drop to 12-14 and 7-6 for the season. They need one win this weekend to clinch a spot in next week's BIG EAST Tournament. U of L clinched last week and will likely stay the No. 2 seed if the Cards win tomorrow against Georgetown. The Hoyas are 8-19 and 2-11 in the BIG EAST.
"We had very, very few unforced errors today, which is where you hope to be at this time of the season," said Leonid Yelin, U of L head coach. "Our hitters were feeling very confident today after a good week of practice and it showed on the court."
The Bulls allowed themselves to fall behind 21-6 and couldn't recover. Hitting .000 did little to help the cause. U of L countered with hitting a season-high .600 in the first set with no hitting errors and were led by Dukule's five kills and outblocked them 4-0.
Louisville hitting stayed hot in the second game, with U of L outhitting USF .600 to .060 and were led by Tatyana Kolesnikova's six kills. USF could not overcome the deficit, falling behind 18-8. The closest the Bulls could manage was nine at 20-11 with the final score of 30-14 being the biggest lead.
U of L blew out to a 19-9 lead in the final set and USF had no answer.
USF was led by Marcela Gurgel's 10 kills and seven digs. Ana Yartseva Stewart game 9 kills, 10 digs and four blocks. Rui Liu hit .833 with five kills on six swings and no errors.
