Lexington, Ky. - The University of Louisville Men's soccer team lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to rival Kentucky in front of a record crowd of 3,227 at the UK Soccer Complex. The Cardinals played without captain Tim Velten in the back field because he received a red card the in the final game last season.
"I thought it was a gutty performance by both teams," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "It was a difficult baptism by fire for our new players. UK held a lot of possession in the first half but I felt we had our best chances to score in the first half. Their goalkeeper came up with two big saves and that is why he is an All-American.
"I thought we made some adjustments in the second half and looked much better in the first 20 minutes of the half. I thought that we controlled the game and held a lot of possession but we just seemed to be lacking something to break Kentucky down. They did a real good job of frustrating David Guzman tonight. They also matched up well with us because they are big in the back and were able to handle Jonke. A draw would have been a fair result but honestly we needed this type of adversity with the crowd and the spirit of the game in order to grow and develop."
Kentucky forward Riley O'Neill slipped past a Cardinal defender and dribbled the ball in the box past Charlie Edwards for the game-winning goal in the 37th minute of the first period. Kentucky finished the game with a 15-10 shot advantage. Edwards finished the game with five saves and Kentucky's Andy Gruenebaum finished with five saves.
The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow as they play High Point at 5:00 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex.
