LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Sophomore shortstop Courtney Moore blasted a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to give the University of Louisville softball team a 1-0 win over visiting Indiana Wednesday at Ulmer Stadium.
Neither team had a runner in scoring position for the first three innings, but the Hoosiers threatened to score in the top of the fourth when Tory Yamaguchi singled and stole second. Lauren Hines was hit by a pitch placing runners at first and second with one out. Louisville starter Aja Sherman retired the next two batters to end the inning.
U of L had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the seventh when Lisa Estes was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a two-out single by Michelle Vasquez. A passed ball moved the runners to second and third, but Indiana starter Megan Roark retired the next batter to end the inning. With the score still tied, the game moved into extra innings.
Indiana had another chance to score in the top of the eighth when Heather Hohs singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kim Richards. Yamaguchi was intentionally walked to place runners at first and second with two outs. Sherman struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Moore led off the ninth and delivered a solo shot over the left field fence for her team-leading eighth home run of the season. The game marked the first extra inning contest of the season for the Hoosiers and the most frames the Cardinals have played in a game all season.
Louisville reliever Catherine Bishop (13-5) picked up the win holding the Hoosiers scoreless and hitless while striking out two in one inning. Sherman combined with Bishop for the shutout, allowing two hits and striking out 14 in eight innings. Offensively, the Cards had six hits in the contest. Moore went 2-for-4 with one RBI from her game-winning home run.
Indiana's Mariangee Bogado (0-4) took the loss allowing one earned run on one hit in one inning. Roark pitched seven strong innings for the Hoosiers, holding the Cards scoreless while scattering five hits and striking out three in seven innings.
"We did not come focused and made several mental mistakes today, but I was pleased to come away with the win," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "I give a lot of credit to Indiana's pitching. They did a nice job of holding our hitters. We need to turn our focus to our upcoming Conference USA series at Charlotte."
U of L (23-12, 8-1 C-USA) will go on the road to play C-USA opponent Charlotte in a three-game series April 9-10.
