
Softball Sweeps Charlotte Doubleheader

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - - The University of Louisville softball team swept host Charlotte 4-0 and 12-0 Saturday in a Conference USA doubleheader.
The teams played through four scoreless innings before the Cards broke through with a three run fifth. Sara Bausher led off the inning with a single and moved to second when Leslie Garland reached safely on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt. Audrey Rendon reached on another fielder's choice and Bausher was out at home on the play. Candi Hicks was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Garland crossed the plate when Moore reached on an error. Lacy Wood reached on a two-base error which scored Rendon and Hicks to make it a 3-0 game.
Louisville added another run in the top of the seventh when Moore reached on a two-out infield hit. Wood's double placed runners on second and third. Michelle Vasquez delivered a single to send Moore home, increasing the lead to 4-0.
U of L starter Aja Sherman (11-7) notched her eighth shutout of the season, allowing three hits and striking out nine in seven innings. Offensively, the Cards had seven hits in the contest. Vasquez was 2 for 3. Moore was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
Charlotte starter Kristen Bowen (8-15) took the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits and striking outh two in seven innings. The 49ers were led by Kristi Killough who was 2 for 3.
In the second game, the Cards jumped to an early 2-0 lead when Rendon led off the game with a bunt single, stole second and took third when Bausher flied out to left field. Courtney Moore powered her ninth home run of the season over the left field fence to make it a 2-0 game.
The Cardinals added three more runs in the top of the fourth when Jenn Skaggs doubled and scored on a base hit by Sarah Totten. Hicks singled and took second on the throw to place runners at second and third for Rendon's two-run double, increasing the lead to 5-0.
The Cardinals scored another run in the sixth when Alma Navarrete reached on an error and moved to third on a single by Hicks. Rendon beat out an infield single, but an error on the play sent Navarrete home to make it a 6-0 game.
Louisville put up a six-spot in the seventh when Wood and Amy Summers delivered back-to-back singles and Jenn Skaggs drew a walk to load the bases. Totten's sacrifice fly scored Wood to give the Cards a 7-0 lead. Summers came home on Hicks' single. Skaggs scored when Garland reached on an error. Rendon's single sent Hicks home. Garland and Rendon crossed the plate on Bausher's two-run single to make it a 12-0 game.
U of L starter Catherine Bishop (14-5) struck out five batters as she posted her seventh shutout of the season. She pitched a no-hitter going into the fifth when Charlotte's Karianne Huffstetler's hit fell in for a double, accounting for the 49er's only hit of the game. Offensively, the Cards had 17 hits in the game. Hicks was 4 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. Rendon was 4 for 5 with a home run, two runs and three RBI. Moore's homer in the first set a new school record for single-season home runs (nine).
"Both of our pitchers are doing a great job of keeping us in the game until we can find ways to score," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "I'm pleased that we were able to get two conference wins on the road."
Charlotte starter Christy Murray (4-13) took the loss, allowing 12 runs, seven earned, on 17 hits and striking out two in seven innings.
Louisville (25-12, 10-1) and Charlotte (12-28-1) will complete the three-game series Sunday at noon.
