
Softball Sweeps Southern Miss 14-0 and 8-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team completed a three-game sweep of Conference USA opponent Southern Miss, beating the Lady Eagles 14-0 and 8-0 in a doubleheader Sunday at Ulmer Stadium.
In the first game, the Cards put up three runs in the bottom of the first. Audrey Rendon led off with a hit and stole second. Courtney Moore singled to center scoring Rendon. Michelle Vasquez followed with a two run shot to right field to make it a 3-0 game.
The Lady Eagles threatened in the top of the second with a leadoff double by Ashley Davis. Charity Butler's single to center moved Davis to third putting the runners at second and third with no outs. Louisville starter Catherine Bishop retired the next three batters to end the inning.
Louisville exploded in the bottom of the second by adding 10 runs to the board. Jenn Skaggs led off the inning with a single and moved to second on Leslie Garland's sacrifice bunt. Skaggs moved to third on Rendon's single and came home on a wild pitch to make it a 4-0 game. Rendon scored on a base hit by Candi Hicks. Moore and Wood drew back to back walks to load the bases for Vasquez, who delivered an RBI single. Moore crossed the plate when Bausher drew a bases-loaded walk to increase the Cards lead to 7-0. With the bases still loaded, Skaggs was hit by a pitch to send Vasquez home. Bausher scored on Garland's base hit to make the score 9-0. Rendon blasted a three-run triple and scored on a throwing error to make it a 13-0 game.
The Cards put up another run in the bottom of the third. Moore singled to lead off the inning and moved to third when Wood reached on a Southern Miss fielding error. Bausher's double scored Moore for the 14-0 win.
Bishop (12-5) picked up her sixth shutout of the season, allowing three hits, striking out five and did not issue a walk in five innings. Offensively, the Cards had 12 hits on the contest and were led by Rendon who went 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and three runs. Vasquez finished the game batting 2-for-2 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Moore also went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs. Bausher joined the rally hitting 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
Southern Miss starter Krystal Crooks (10-6) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits.
In the second game, the Cardinals jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Rendon led of the inning with a single, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Hicks. Moore followed with a hard a single back to the pitcher. Rendon scored when Moore moved to second on a throwing error on the play.
Louisville added another run in the bottom of the third when Lisa Estes notched a two out single and scored on Vasquez double to make it a 2-0 game.
The Cardinals added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth when Bausher was hit by a pitch and moved to second on Garland's sacrifice bunt. Rendon's double sent Bausher to third putting runners at second and third with one out. Bausher scored on a squeeze by Hicks. Moore's fielder's choice scored Rendon giving the Cards a 4-0 lead.
The Cards ended the game in the bottom of the sixth when Moore walked and moved to second on a single by Wood. Estes was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Vasquez crushed her first career grand slam to hand the Cardinals the 8-0 victory.
Louisville starter Aja Sherman (10-7) picked up her seventh shutout of the season, allowing three hits and striking out five in six innings. Offensively, the Cards had 11 hits in the contest. Rendon and Wood each went 2-for-4 and Bausher went 2-for-2 with a double. Vasquez also went 2-for-4 with a double, a grand slam, a run and four RBI.
Southern Miss starter Diane Hammes (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs, three of them earned on eight hits in 3.1 innings. The Lady Eagles fall to 19-21 (5-7 C-USA),
U of L (21-12, 8-1) will play host to Indiana in a single game Wednesday April 6 at 4:00 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
