
Softball Beats Eastern Kentucky 10-6

RICHMOND, Ky. -- Left fielder Candi Hicks went two for three with three RBIs and a home run to lead the University of Louisville softball team to a 10-6 win over Eastern Kentucky Thursday afternoon in Richmond.
The Cardinals balanced a less than stellar error total of 6 with 13 hits and 10 runs for the win and improve their record to 29-16. Eastern Kentucky had six runs on six hits with four errors to drop to 16-23.
Eastern Kentucky got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first. Adriel Foxley smacked an RBI double to bring home Chanze Patterson who had reached on a single. Later in the inning, Amy Mayrhoffer scored from third on a passed ball by U of L catcher Jen Skaggs.
The Cardinals used a big fourth inning on five hits and three costly Colonel errors. Michelle Vasquez singled, scored and had an RBI sacrifice fly to contribute for the Cards' six run inning. Skaggs doubled and Leslie Garland had a two RBI single in the effort.
EKU answered in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer by Suzie Schaefer and added two more in their half of the fifth. Patterson led off with a single and stole second. She scored on a Mayrhoffer single that was bobbled in left field to allow her to cross the plate to bring EKU within one at 6-5.
The Cardinals put up two in the sixth on a two-run homer by Hicks and then added two more in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Skaggs hit her second double and scored on an RBI single by Leslie Garland. Garland scored on that play on an error by the centerfielder.
Eastern scored in the bottom of the seventh when Foxley reached after being hit by a pitch, went to second on an error and then scored on a passed ball but relief pitcher Catherine Bishop struck out the final batter to get her second save of the season.
Starter Aja Sherman pitched five innings, striking out five and giving up six hits and five runs of which three were earned. The win boosted her record to 14-9. EKU starter Beth Conner was tagged with the loss to move her record to 2-3.
