
Softball Tops No. 4 Oklahoma 2-1

CLEARWATER, Fla. * Sophomore Catherine Bishop tossed a one-hitter as the University of Louisville softball team defeated fourth-ranked Oklahoma 2-1 Saturday and Aja Sherman also posted a one-hitter in the Cards' 9-0 win over Appalachian State Saturday in the Clearwater Invitational.
In the game against Oklahoma, the Sooners started the scoring in the top of the third when Tayl'r Hollis drew a walk and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Norrelle Dickson. A wild pitch sent her to second and she scored on a passed ball to give OU a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the fourth when Sara Bausher singled, moved to second when Courtney Moore reached on an error and came home on a base hit by Jenn Skaggs to tie the game at 1-1. Aja Sherman's single scored Moore to give Louisville a 2-1 lead.
Bishop held the Sooners hitless until the seventh inning when Kami Keiter delivered a pinch hit single. She was replaced by pinch runner Amber Spaulding, who took second on a passed ball and moved when Norelle Dickson grounded out to third with two outs. Bishop retired the next batters to preserve the win.
Bishop (2-0) gave up one unearned run on one hit and struck out seven in seven innings. Offensively, the Cards had four hits in the game. Sherman was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Skaggs was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Bausher was 1-for-3 with a run. Audrey Rendon was also 1-for-3.
Against Appalachian State, the Cards jumped ahead early when Audrey Rendon led off the game with a single and stole second to set up Bausher's two-run home run.
U of L added another run in the second when Michelle Vasquez reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third on Rendon's single and crossed the plate on a double steal to make it a 3-0 game.
In the fifth inning, Louisville's Candi Hicks led off with a base hit, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Courtney Moore's triple brought Hicks home to give the Cards a 4-0 lead.
U of L put up a five spot in the seventh. Bausher hit a solo home run to lead off the inning. Courtney Moore drew a walk and took second when Aja Sherman reached on a fielder's choice. Christine Bartle's RBI single scored Moore to make it a 6-0 game. Lisa Estes blasted a three-run home run to give the Cards a 9-0 lead.
Offensively, the Cardinals had 12 hits in the game. Bausher was 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs. Rendon was 2-for-4 with a run and three stolen bases. Moore was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run.
Sherman (1-1), who held the Mountaineers hitless until the sixth inning, got the complete-game shutout, allowing only one hit.
"I was extremely pleased with our performance today," said Sandy Pearsall. "I think we definitely showed that we have the firepower to compete with some very good teams. I thought our pitchers threw very well, although we do need to reduce the number of walks we give up. I've been very happy with our offensive production the past few games."
Louisville (3-1) will play No. 13/14 Tennessee at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
