CLEARWATER, Fla. - The University of Louisville softball team lost to Tennessee 4-0 on Sunday on the final day of the Clearwater Invitational.
The Lady Vols got on the scoreboard in the top of the second when Brittany Bessho led off with an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shannon Doepking and took third on a passed ball. Tonya Callahan drew a walk to set up Lindsay Schutzler's two-run double to give UT a 2-0 lead.
Doepking's solo shot in the fourth increased Tennessee's lead to 3-0. Callahan followed with a walk. Kenora Posey entered the game as a pinch runner, moved to second when Schutzler grounded out and scored on a Louisville error to make it a 4-0 game in the fourth inning.
Louisville starter Aja Sherman (1-2) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned on four hits in four innings. Catherine Bishop came on in relief and allowed three hits and struck out four in three innings. Offensively, the Cards had three hits in the contest. Courtney Moore finished the game batting 2-for-3.
Tennessee starter Monica Abbott (3-0) picked up the complete game shutout win, scattering three hits and striking out 13. She has not allowed a run in 24 innings and five appearances. The Lady Vols had seven hits in the game and were led by Schutzler, who was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
"We had a wonderful opportunity to play a top-ranked team that was loaded with talent, but we did not come ready to play today," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We faced one of the top pitchers in the country today and she did a great job keeping us off balance - although a few of our players such as Courtney Moore and Audrey Rendon did a great job of finding a way to get on base."
U of L (3-2) will travel to Las Vegas on Feb. 11-13 to compete in the UNLV Desert Classic. The Cards will face BYU and Washington on Feb. 11.
