
Softball Shuts out Southern Miss and San Jose State

MONROE, La. - - The University of Louisville softball team remained undefeated in the Louisiana-Monroe Mardi Gras Softball Classic, defeating Southern Miss 4-0 and San Jose State 1-0 Saturday.
In a non-conference game against Southern Miss, the Cardinals got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Lisa Estes led off the inning with a single and moved to second on an error. She took third on Jenn Skaggs' groundout, and scored when Leslie Garland's infield single to give Louisville a 1-0 lead.
U of L put up three more runs in the fourth. Estes led off the inning with a single to set up Sara Bausher's two-run shot over the left field fence. Skaggs was hit by a pitch, took second on Garland's sacrifice hit and scored on Audrey Rendon's single to make it a 4-0 game.
Cardinal starter Catherine Bishop (5-1) picked up the complete game shutout win, holding the Lady Eagles to one hit and striking out two in seven innings. Offensively the Cards had eight hits in the game and were led by Estes, who was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs.
Jessica Saunier (1-3) took the loss for Southern Miss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and striking out two in six innings. Jessica Huerta delivered the Lady Eagles' only hit, a single up the middle to lead off the game.
In the game against San Jose State, the teams played through five scoreless innings before Louisville finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Audrey Rendon singled up the middle and stole second. Courtney Moore's two-out single brought Rendon home to make it a 1-0 game.
The Spartans had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the fourth when Elisa Barrios singled and stole second. Louisville catcher Christine Bartle tried to pick Barrios off at second, but overthrew as Barrios took third and came home. Louisville centerfielder Sara Bausher rifled a throw to Bartle who tagged Barrios at the plate for the out.
Louisville starter Aja Sherman (3-4) got the complete game shutout win, scattering two hits over seven innings and striking out eight. The Cards had five hits in the game.
San Jose State's Carol Forbes (5-5) took the loss, allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out seven.
"We faced two good teams tonight in Southern Miss and San Jose State and I am happy to come away with two wins," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "I was pleased with our pitching in both games. We also played very well defensively - we're finally starting to come around and make the plays we are capable of making."
U of L (8-5) went undefeated (4-0) in tournament pool play and is scheduled to play the winner of San Jose State and Louisiana Tech Sunday at 2:30 p.m. (EST) in the championship game.
