
Softball Splits in Courtyard Marriott Red & Black Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team opened the Courtyard Marriott Red & Black Classic with a 5-0 win against Ball State and a 4-0 loss to No. 24 Missouri Friday .
In the opening game, Louisville jumped on the scoreboard in the first when Audrey Rendon reached on a walk and stole second. Two outs later, senior Sara Bausher hit a two run homerun giving the Cards a 2-0 lead.
The Cards added another run in the top of the second when junior Michelle Vasquez led off the inning by hitting her third homerun of the season.
Ball State threatened to score in the bottom of the third when Katie Pilger led off the inning with a double. Pinch runner Alyssa Huffman moved to third on Crystal Newton's fielder's choice. Louisville starter Catherine Bishop retired the next two batters to end the inning.
Louisville had an opportunity to score again in the top of the fourth when Lacy Wood hit a double with one out. Wood advanced to third on a fielder's choice by Leslie Garland. Ball State's pitcher Nicki Hellem retired the next batter to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth sophomore Candi Hicks led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a single by Courtney Moore. Bausher's single to left scored Hicks to make the game 4-0.
The Cards increased their lead in the top of the sixth when Wood led off with her second double of the game. Pinch hitter Christine Bartle hit a single that moved Wood to third. Garland re-entered the game at first base for Bartle. An infield hit by Rendon moved Garland to second loading the bases with no outs. Bausher's two out walk scored Wood giving the Cards a 5-0 lead.
Louisville's Bishop (6-1) picked up the win, allowing only three hits and striking out seven in seven innings. Offensively, the Cards had 11 hits in the game. Wood was 4-for-4 with two doubles and a run. Bausher was 2-for-3 with a homerun, one run scored and four RBI.
Ball State's Hellem (1-2) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and striking out three in five innings. BSU falls to 1-4 on the season.
In the second game of the day, Missouri struck first in the top of third inning with a lead off double from Ashley Hays. Kendra Power followed with a walk. Leanne Bowers moved runners to second and third as she grounded out to first. Sophomore Allison Kennewell then singled, driving in both Hays and Power to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Missouri started the top of the sixth inning with a leadoff double from Micaela Minner. Amy Henke entered the game to pinch run for Minner. Henke moved to third on Jaci Schuyler's fly out to centerfield. Heather Kunkel's single brought Henke home to make it a 3-0 game.
The Tigers added another run in the seventh when Power registered her second double of the game and scored on a single by Bowers to increase the lead 4-0.
Missouri's Jen Bruck got the win, improving her record to 4-1 on the year. She held the Cards scoreless, allowing four hits and striking out four in four innings. The No. 24 ranked Tigers improve to 9-1 on the season.
Louisville's Sherman (3-5) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits and striking out eight in seven innings.
The Cardinal (9-6) will face Iowa at 1:00 p.m., Saturday at Ulmer Stadium on the second day of the Courtyard Marriott Red & Black Classic.
