LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Needing a win to qualify for the 2005 BIG EAST Conference Tournament, Rutgers defeated the University of Louisville women's soccer team 2-0 on Sunday in the final regular season match of the year.
Louisville(11-7-0, 6-5-0 BIG EAST) will be the #3 seed out of Division B, and will enjoy a first-round bye before travelling to Milwaukee to face Division A number two seed Marquette on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET with the winner advancing to he semifinals.
"Today was just a mental letdown and I feel bad for the seniors. We lost to a hungrier and more aggressive Rutgers team," Head Coach Karen Ferguson said.
Dominique Esposito redirected a shot by Amanda Allessio past Louisville keeper Deana Waintraub in the 72nd minute to give the Knights (9-9-1, 5-6-0 BIG EAST) a 1-0 advantage.
After a foul in the box by the Cardinals, Rutgers' Zoe Avner converted the penalty kick to close the scoring at 83:39.
Shots were even at 11 apiece, with both teams making four saves.
In a pregame ceremony, Louisville seniors Kim DeBolt, Ashley Garcia, Gina Lower, Hollie Minogue and Heather Shreffler were honored as part of Senior Day. The group has been part of 35 victories in their four years, second only to the class of 1996 which captured 36 wins.
Rutgers is the #4 seed in Division B and will host #5 seed Pitt. Connecticut and Notre Dame won their respective divisions and will await the winners of the first round match-ups. The semifinals and finals will be held in Milwaukee.
